The Silent Killer - Chronic Inflammation

Hello All,

Where is the fire? 🔥

Have you ever wondered what "Inflammation" is and what it means for your health?  Do you have any symptoms of chronic inflammation?  Read on to find out...

🔥Chronic inflammatory diseases are the most significant cause of death in the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) ranks chronic diseases as the greatest threat to human health. 👀

Short-term inflammation is the body’s natural healing response to fight infection, allergens, illness or trauma/injury.  This is positive 👍

👍As part of the inflammatory response, your body increases its production of pro-inflammatory compounds such as white blood cells and other immune cells to fight infection.  These appear physically in the body as acute (short-term) inflammation and include redness, pain, heat, and swelling.

💥CHRONIC (long-term) inflammation however, happens when the inflammatory response lingers and the body remains in "fight" mode.  This often occurs inside your body, without any noticeable symptoms.

Silently.  But,

can cause serious damage to healthy tissues and can cause illnesses like diabetes, fatty liver disease, heart disease, auto-immune conditions and cancer.

💥Chronic inflammation can also happen when people are obese or under stress.  Some common signs and symptoms of chronic inflammation include:

  • Body pain, joint stiffness, muscle pain
  • Chronic fatigue and insomnia
  • Depression, anxiety and mood disorders
  • Gastrointestinal issues such as constipation, diarrhoea and acid reflux
  • Weight gain or weight loss
  • Frequent infections

A poor diet, excess alcohol consumption and an inactive lifestyle are MAJOR factors that can promote chronic inflammation.

So how can you reduce your risk of chronic inflammation?

  • Regular exercise: Exercise can decrease inflammatory markers and your risk of chronic disease.
  • Sleep: Getting a good night's sleep is VERY important. Research has found that a poor night’s sleep increases inflammation.
  • Eat an Anti-Inflammatory Diet:🍓🍏🥦🥑🍇 Eat fewer inflammatory foods and more anti-inflammatory foods.  A diet rich in whole, nutrient-dense foods that contain antioxidants will help to reduce free radicals (harmful compounds) in the body that can lead to inflammation.  Avoid processed foods and focus on fruits, vegetables and good fats, such as fatty fish like sardines and salmon. More detail on an Anti-Inflammatory diet in our next blog post. "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food"  - Hippocrates.
  • Look after your Gut Health:  Numerous scientific studies have linked the gut microbiome to inflammatory diseases.  Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, such as Crohn’s disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), multiple sclerosis (MS), and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), change the composition of the gut bacteria. In addition, there are many reports highlighting the gut microbiota role in the cause of inflammatory diseases such as asthma, type 1 and type 2 diabetes and obesity.
